Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 201 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations BEFORE we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

I don't mean to judge, but I feel David falls in love too quickly. When Em'ly marries Ham, David easily seems to grow more fond of Agnes; whom had not been considered a possible love interest while David was still fixated on Em'ly. Now he meets Mr. Spenlow's daughter, Dora, and it's portrayed like love at first sight for him. Before David even knew her, he "loved Dora Spenlow to distraction!" Also, it's understandable that David is upset when he finds out Uriah loves Agnes by Uriah himself, but I get the feeling that it's neither due entirely to his disrespect for Heep, nor his closeness with Agnes, but for selfish reasons as well; selfish reasons that may consist of jealousy.

I agree. It can be for selfish reasons
ReplyDeleteI think David has an immature understanding of love. He seems to be searching for something, maybe a meaningful relationship. He sees other people falling in love and getting engaged and I think that he's jealous of that. He doesn't necessarily love Dora like he thinks that he does, but he loves the idea of having someone that could mean so much to him. It seems that he's searching for the love and connection he lost when he was a child and he thinks that it is expected of him to fall in love at this age.
ReplyDeleteI agree with his response but view it as a a literary device for something that might happen to David. We know he does things impulsively like be friends with steerforth even though everybody advises him against it and look how that turned out. This is just another example of Dickens using a familiar characteristic trait to foreshadow another downfall of David
ReplyDeleteI agree that David falls in love with any girl that walks his way. I think this is because his mother died when he was young and their relationship was so close and affectionate, that he is looking for a replacement and any type of maternal, womanly attention. He grows very attached to the girls that he falls for, ie: Little Em'ly, Agnes, and now Dora just as he was attached to his mother. I think that Little Em'ly marrying Ham, and Uriah declaring that he wants to marry Agnes brings about an unconscious feeling and memory of Mr. Murdstone coming into the picture and taking his mother from him which projects as jealousy.
ReplyDeletei agree. david falls in love way to quickly. he doesnt even know dora and hes already saying he loves her. and maybe he loves so quickly because of the lack of love growing up after mr. murdstone took over of his family. perhaps the lack of love creates this jealousy you speak of.
ReplyDeleteI do feel as though David did fall in love at first sight. David and Agnes always had this tight bond/care for one another. I'm not sure if David's love for Agnes grew because of Em'ly marrying Ham. What other Selfish reasons other than Jealousy?
ReplyDeleteI agree with your post. I also feel that David falls in love to quickly and I believe that when he sees his love interest pursue someone else, it triggers that jealous bone inside of him The cliche " love at first sight" is true in certain situations but I feel that whenever David is interested in a girl, he tends to jump the gun to quickly rather than wait for the opportunity to present itself.
ReplyDeleteDepending on the perspective, David has a right to be jealous of Uriah. He Hasn't had an easy life up to now, and someone who's walked in his shoes may ultimately conclude that the world owes them something; that they're at least entitled to a semi-happy existence. David might soon realize he has to work for even the simpler things in life.
ReplyDeleteI agree with my fellow classmate, I do believe that David falls in love too quickly. At his age his hormones are being sky rocketed and falls for any cute girl he see's. David accepts the fact that Emily is marrying Ham despite the fact that Emily was his first childhood crush. With that he can move more freely with Dora. Dora is his new interest in heart. Again he falls in love with girls too fast. But David is jealous about Agnes but he can't have everyone. He has to learn to control himself.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with his blog because David just falls too quickly without even having a mutual feeling returned from either Agnes or Emily. I feel like he is looking for attention from anyone that will give it to him and then when someone else comes along they are considered his new fond admiration. Dora is his new "love" and I honestly don't think he quite has an understanding what love is.
ReplyDeleteDavid does fall into love very fast and that's apart of his immature behavior he fall in love without getting to no someone, furthermore when he realize that this relationship will never work he turnes a blind eye avoiding the truth, he does this for his own selfish reason. This will be a big part of David becoming a man is to let go of these childish decision.
ReplyDeleteThat seems to hold true; David falling in love too quickly. I feel it may be that since David's mother is no longer with him, David is trying to find someone to love that will love him back, just like his mother did for him. He seems to be unknowingly searching for someone to connect to, so that he could fill the hole in his heart that his mother had left behind.
ReplyDeleteDavids innocents can be portrayed by his love for girls. We all know that David loved his mother more than anything in the world. He had no one to turn to but to his mother for a while. His mother was the most innocent person in Davids life and she was a female. We can perhaps discern that David has a sort of secure feeling around women. David has a deep need for good connections with people in his life. We know that most of his life he has dealt with wicked people that mistreat David in many ways. David is however hopeful and perhaps overly compensates that need by feeling a strong attachment to any pretty girl that reminds him of his mother.
ReplyDeleteI believe David may indeed show signs of jealousy because he has grown more fond of Agnes, meanwhile David and Uriah aren't the closest of friends. In fact, they are more so rivals than anything else. Also, it does seem kind of odd how David seems interested in Agnes but at the same time adjusts his views and interests to Dora, a so- called love at first sight. The fact that he's jealous of Uriah loving Agnes reveals that he's created a situation in which he has to decide who is more important to him: Agnes, whom he has gotten to know fairly well, or Dora, who he has just met and believes is his soul mate.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that David is a jealous person. We see this from the start even with his mother when Mr. Murdstone fist came into the picture. He was jealous that she was spending time with her. Jealousy carries on throughout David's life when he hears about Em'ly and Ham he said that although he was happy for her, he also felt jealousy overcome him. I don't particularly believe in love at first sight and I don't understand how he could fall for Dora instantly. He says he loves her to distraction but is that true love then. I believe he craves attention and love from all the women that come into his life because Mr. Murdstone stripped him and his mother's relationship apart and then she passed away.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your remark I feel that David is kind of lost right now and his heart is yearning for something deeper that probably wasn't provided to him when he was younger although he is still maturing and his hormones are riled up I can see how he could almost fall in love with every girl he sees especially when most of the people who went to his boarding school were males and no females. I believe David is probably sexually frustrated and is trying to cope with and release all that concealed tension. Also I believe with David's mother out of the picture and him having an abusive father in Mr. Murdstone, I guess David has some difficulty in dealing with women socially since his mom wasn't there.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with you on the fact that David falls in love quickly. From reading the story so far, it appears that David has yet to distinguish the difference between love and infatuation. David believes he is in love but in reality he's infatuated with Dora, this is understandable since he is young.
