Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 201 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations BEFORE we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

Unnecessary?

As I was reading the most recently assigned chapters, I thought to myself,"Why does David have to lose a wife and his child?" At first, I though Dickens was being cruel for the sake of being cruel. Then I analysed it further to realise that Dickens must have done this so David's next encounter with good fortune would feel even more significant than his last. Perhaps he will end up with Agnes after all.
