Welcome to the blog for Prof. John Talbird's English 201 class. The purpose of this site is two-fold: 1) to continue the conversations we start in class (or to start conversations BEFORE we get to class) and 2) to practice our writing/reading on a weekly basis in an informal forum.

The Indian Uprising
This story was a mind blower. It was interesting it took a page for me to start to realize that the old man was a teacher having dinner with an older student.. I hope that's what I'm getting at.. Then the old man dies of kidney failure I assume because he refused dialysis. I guess this teacher left an impression on his student because her ex seemed to remember him. The teacher has a witty mouth and doesn't seemed to bite his tongue. Maybe cause he knew he was dying he didn't seem fearful of the blood on his sock and he added humor by leaving the restaurant taking the hat off the wall.

What Im getting out of this scene in the beginning is 2 people that obviously attended college together and began reminiscing about it. One character is a young female whos obviously spoiled by her father and the other character is an elderly man.
ReplyDeleteOn page 18-20 the old man and the woman are on their way to get a bite to eat and he mentions some one that she's dealing with or dealt with and hes showing signs of jealousy. He shows that he doesn't like the fellow and doesn't think of him as his equal. He just goes on and on rambling.
The conclusion is sort of confusing but what Im trying to get out of it is that her and Franklin were actually in a relationship. But then it became more clear when her ex husband mentioned that he doesnt know what she ever saw in him but hes impressed with her loyalty.
I thought he meant she was faithful to the fact of hanging with the cooky old professor
DeleteOf all things, I find it quite interesting how the story opens up with "THERE'S NO COPYRIGHT" all in capital letters. There must be a reason behind this. Also, its odd how we don't find the characters names out until later on in the story; they are not revealed right away. Another thing to point out is that we don't find out they are on the phone until they hang up. Once I read over it again, I could tell it was a conversation over the phone.
ReplyDeleteBasically the scene where the two characters are talking to each other about where they should eat, they went during a time where it was snowing.
In the conclusion, she went on and mentioned how Franklin drank himself to death. The last paragraph really drew me in. It just felt like this sudden shift or change, from winter to spring just like Franklin went from alive to dead. She also went on to say that a story is written if one doesn't know who or what they love, but a poem is written if they do. I guess that means that a story can be changed and embellished on, however a poem reveals the truest, innermost feelings one can have.
the author is holding back alot of information in the opening, he does not reveal names of any of the 2 character just that they are very comfortable with each other, it seems that they are old friends, one is an older man and the other is younger lady . thats have been friends a very long time,he does reveal that they are not having the conversation in person on page 17. the author shows the humor between the old man and girl but throughs in a twist when he puts her ex husband in the same restaurant as the professor and the student. i believe the author wanted it to be a day of visiting the past for one last time.the author purposely place her exhusband at the restaurant where is brings back memory.......
